Actually i used it since secondary 1, when my friend - CiXuan, introduced it to me. And the other one i used it only since last year. Both have different applications, simple and easy to use. And they're also free.
So the software i've been currently using and going to talk about is:

Yup, the one i'm using is photoscape, you can click on the banner above to download it. Its free :)
If you want, you can just you know random click around explore all the functions and try to get a rough idea what button give you what effect, outcome, pictures etc.
So you click edit picture on the main page.
(the picture on the left hand side always changes, its powered by flickr.)
just click on the picture you want to edit (on the left hand side bar) then the picture will appear on the clipboard :) Then you can start editing the brightness and everything, resize the picture, then move on to 'object' , beside the 'home' , to add in pictures/texts /decorations to your picture. If you want to crop your photos, go to 'crop' and for other tools you need, you can check out the 'tool'
two of my favourite functions is:
Also another awesome fuction of photoscape is that it has this screen shot button. It allows you to screen shot a page/region or whatever you want, then you can edit the picture (if you want) immediately. After capturing the screenshot, it will automatically be on the the clipboard and then you can start editing :)
this one. This is actually to brighten up your picture. LOL! I know its kinda lame but its rather useful when you took a photo of you but its not that nice due to lighting you can use it to improve on. Secondly you can see that i clicked the 'apply gray tone' button. I kinda like it cause it somehow blemishes my skin, so it looks smoother.
Next is this. You can click ctrl + F and it will give you this tool bar or you can simply click 'home' > 'filter' > 'film effect'. You can add in all sorts of effects like cross process, Agfa etc and under the 'filter' there're also many other effects which you can use.
